There are over 7 billion laboratory tests performed in the United states yearly. Diagnostic testing is a wide variety of physical examinations, including invasive and noninvasive. Doctors use the tests to confirm the presence or absence of diseases, monitor your progress during treatment, and identify your underlying problem based on your symptoms. Invasive diagnostic tests are done by entering and making incisions or pricks in the body, such as biopsies or blood samples. At the same time, non-invasive involves using highly advanced diagnostic equipment to create images of the internal organs. There are no incisions made during noninvasive diagnostic testing.request an appointment
The doctors at Axon Health Associates use some of the following diagnostic tests to determine your medical condition and create a personalized treatment plan:
X-rays use electromagnetic waves to create images of internal tissues, organs, and bones on digital media or film. X-rays are noninvasive, so there are no incisions involved. They were the first diagnostic imaging test to be used. They help doctors to:
- Assess a part of the body experiencing pain and discomfort
- Help diagnose diseases
- Monitor the progress of a disease
- Check whether treatment is working
Your doctor may order an X-ray for conditions such as fractures, tumors, bone cancer, arthritis, dental problems, osteoarthritis, or infections.
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This highly advanced diagnostic imaging procedure uses magnetic and radio waves to create highly-detailed images of internal structures such as soft tissues, bones, or organs. MRI detects tumors, stroke, aneurysms, brain injury from trauma, or spinal cord disorders.
Computed tomography (CT) uses computers and rotating X-ray machines to create cross-sectional images to view body structures inside the body. The images provide detailed information about the blood vessels, soft tissues, bones, spine, shoulders, head, knee, abdomen, chest, and heart.
EMG / NCV Studies
Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) are electrodiagnostic tests used to diagnose neuromuscular (nerves and muscles) disorders, neuropathies, nerve injuries, motor problems, neck and spine conditions, and other conditions such as:
- Cervical spondylosis
- Herniated disk
- Pinched nerve
- Muscular dystrophy
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Guillain-Barre syndromes
The tests measure the electrical activity of muscles and nerves. It is given to people whose pain, cramping, muscle weakness, tingling, or numbing sensation does not go away.
Spinal & Postural Screenings
Spine and postural screenings are diagnostic processes used to check if there are any alignment issues in the spine. The screening allows a close analysis of posture and spine before they turn to chronic neck or back pain.
Chiropractors evaluate the condition of their patient’s spinal structure and any abnormalities or irregularities along the spine that may affect balance or posture. Spinal or postural issues may present with the following symptoms:
Difficulty sitting or standing
Numbness or tingling sensation
Pain or pressure in the neck or back
If you have an abnormal posture, it may contribute to the development and progression of spinal conditions such as
Shoulder or neck injuries
Uses of Diagnostic Testing
Diagnostic testing helps discover any underlying issue or condition that you may have.
They fulfill the following roles:
- To confirm or exclude a suspected disease or ailment
- A triage; an initial test with a low margin of error
- To monitor the progress of treatment
- For prognosis to assess the outcome of treatment or disease progression
- To screen the presence of a disease showing no symptoms
